Beskrivelse:
In this radio program, we meet the Polish historian, politician and social activist Dr. Krzysztof Czubaszek in a longer conversation about history, memory and responsibility. The starting point is his personal and professional path – but the focus is especially on his many years of work documenting and disseminating the history of the Jewish population of Łuków in eastern Poland, a community that was wiped out during the Holocaust. It is a conversation about a lost local community, about silence after the war – and about why the work with local historical memory is still necessary today.

On the 80th anniversary of the end of the WWII, Polin – Museum of the History of the Polish Jews in Warsaw presents the exhibition “1945. Not the End. Not the Beginning“. It’s dedicated to Polish Jews who survived the Holocaust. It’s about their postwar reality and experiences through the eyes of those who survived.
It is a story about people who tried to rebuild their lives on the ruins of the old world. Deprived of everything—their nearest and dearest, their community and their home, grappling with loss and desolation,—it was above all a moment of dramatic decision-making: What next? Stay or leave? Return home? Rebuild their community and Jewish life? Engage in politics? Hide their Jewish identity? Stay in spite of them being met with hostility, or even with violence from the Poles? Or emigrate?
The dilemmas and life paths of Polish Jews after the war are explored in the exhibition by tracing the stories of selected individuals: those who believed that their future in Poland was not yet determined and those who chose to leave—a decision made by the overwhelming majority. Between 1944 and 1946, over 200,000 Jews left Poland.
The idea and the title of the exhibition is taken from a Polish writer, Anna Bikont‘s book “1945. Not the end. Not the beginning”. By courtesy of Polin Museum, Radio Shalom and yours truly was guided around the exhibition by museum’s Monika Chojnacka in a very competent and inspiring way. I do hope Monika’s tour of the exhibition will encourage the listeners to consider spending a weekend in Warsaw to see the exhibition. I highly recommend it. The exhibition ends on 15. September 2025.
